Christopher Hitchens’s criticism about Mother Teresa as a fanatic is very much hurting. Mr. Christopher who is an author and a journalist is very efficient in displaying brilliant speeches about the problems in different countries. Christopher Hitchens’s criticisms about Mother Teresa clearly indicate that he didn’t understand the Mother Teresa’s good qualities.
Once he criticized Mother Teresa for going to the place of Pope by walk instead of getting a taxi. He explained this as an act of Mother Teresa’s to capture hearts. Christopher couldn’t judge the polite and peaceful behavior of Mother Teresa. To understand Mother Teresa’s policies, Christopher has to understand India first. He has to stay n India for at least some time to understand India.
Many of the Indian leaders have adopted politeness as their unique quality. The father of India, Mahatma Gandhi also lived as an excellent example for politeness. Hence Mother Theresa, who is the citizen of India, will eventually have all the good qualities of an Indian. Mother Teresa’s good qualities have made her think that saving dollars spend in getting taxi at Rome can be used to help a poor in India. Moreover, Mother Teresa who actively participated in serving the poor has walked the streets and slums of Kolkata to collect and deliver funds to help the poor. Mr. Christopher has to understand Mother Teresa preferred walking rather than traveling in posh taxis to cover even short distances.
Mother Teresa has grabbed the attention of people worldwide towards the poor and needy through her service. She is a symbol of sacrifice who dedicated her soul and body to serve the poor and hence living as a true Christian. He taught the people that Christianity is not everything about going to churches and praying but true Christianity is living according to the principles of Bible.
How can Mother Teresa who lived as a true Christian be a fanatic. Did she talk anything bad about any other religion? Or did she prepare to attack other religious spots? Or did she try to destroy other religion and tried to spread Christianity? Mr. Christopher has to provide a clear answer for this. Mother Teresa was awarded the Bharat Ratna award, Padma shri award and Jawaharlal Nehru world prize because of her politeness and peacefulness. When Mother Teresa passed away, the honor given to National Leaders was given to her by the Indian Government.
Christopher Hitchens pointed out that Mother Teresa sleeked consideration of kindness to Charles Keating, a financial swindler who provided some charity funds to her organization. Christopher defined this as fraudulent. Mother Theresa, who is not aware of the cheats and frauds, believed that Charles Keating was innocent. This reveals the innocence of Mother Teresa and not that she is fraudulent as said by Mr. Christopher.
Pope started the steps (beatification) to award the saint status to Mother Teresa following her quick healing of cancer in a lady, Monica Besra in just a single night. Christopher described this miracle as fake and he explained “her physician says that she didn’t have cancerous tumor and that tubercular cyst was cured by a course of prescription medicine.”
It has to be noted that Mother Theresa didn’t expect any disease-healing miracle from God in her lifetime. Her hard work along with extreme belief n God has cured the diseases of many poor. Mother Teresa who is no more can get no benefit out of announcing this miracle to the world. It’s Pope who made the publicity for this and Christopher can criticize him and not Mother Teresa.
Mother Teresa lived not only as a true Christian but also as a Good Human. It will be good if Christopher can explain how a Human Being can live on Earth with better qualities than those Mother Teresa posses?
